Director of Research and Evaluation

Belal serves as the Director of Research and Evaluation at Strategic Spartanburg, Inc., where he leverages his expertise in data analysis and social science research to enhance the quality of life for residents of Spartanburg County. His professional background includes a significant role at the Center for Insecurity and Inequality Research at Oklahoma State University. His extensive experience encompasses statistical and GIS data analysis, policy analysis, and program evaluation.

Belal holds a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Dhaka, an M.A. in Sociology from Middle Tennessee State University, and is currently completing his Ph.D. in Sociology at Oklahoma State University. His research focuses on environmental justice, social inequality, public health, food insecurity, and sustainability. He has published his work in prestigious journals, including the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction, Sustainability, Hydrological Sciences Journal, Sociology of Development, and Journal of World-Systems Research.

In addition to his professional and academic endeavors, he is deeply committed to community engagement and sustainable development. His previous role as UNEP TUNZA National Youth Advisor for Bangladesh underscores his dedication to environmental advocacy and youth participation in sustainability initiatives. Now residing in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with his wife, he enjoys walking, gardening, and connecting with nature. He maintains close ties with his family in Bangladesh and cherishes the value of community both locally and globally.
