Founding Executive Director
Midas Hampton, Ph.D., is the Founding Executive Director of Strategic Spartanburg, Inc., a nonprofit research organization that uses data and evidence to improve the quality of life for residents in Spartanburg County. With a background spanning direct service, community development, research, policy, and evaluation, Dr. Hampton champions equity and participatory approaches. He serves on the Spartanburg Academic Movement’s Movement 2030 Community Advisory Board, Live Healthy Spartanburg’s Community Advisory Board, and many others. His work extends nationally, including contributions to the Urban Institute, United for A.L.I.C.E, and Purpose Built Communities, emphasizing his impact both locally and beyond.
Academically accomplished, Dr. Hampton began his academic journey with a BS from the University of South Carolina-Upstate, followed by a master’s degree in public administration from Seattle University, which cemented his dedication to community development. He recently earned his Ph.D. in Urban Leadership and Entrepreneurship with a concentration in Urban Sustainability and Resilience from the University of the District of Columbia, with research delving into vital topics such as neighborhood change, quality-of-life indicators, data equity, community development, gentrification, and stakeholder engagement.
Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Hampton enjoys a fulfilling personal life in Spartanburg with his partner, Lauren, and their two daughters, Athena and Zari. Together with their cherished dog, the Hampton family embodies a spirit of community and compassion, reflecting Dr. Hampton’s commitment to driving significant change in his community and beyond.
